The play takes its name from a work published in 1585 by Tommaso Garzoni which attempted to describe every type of street art and job, including comics, mimes, acrobats, and jugglers. |
| The Plot Upon leaving the house the Doctor entrusts his servant Arlecchino with the task of making certain that Ricciolina the maid sees and meets no one while he is out because he is in love with her and very jealous. Pantalone arrives bemoaning the fact that love is a terrible thing. He tries to get Arlecchino to let him see Ricciolina, but Arlecchino will not give in. The Captain comes on the scene boasting of his bravery, and he too tries to see Ricciolina, but Arlecchino refuses him as well. When Arlecchino's own advances toward Ricciolina are refused he calls The Captain and Pantalone back on the scene and sets up a meeting for them with Ricciolina. He then warns The Doctor in advance of this illicit encounter and steps back to see what will happen. |
